Introduction to Research Design: Undertaking Research in Urban and Development Studies

About the course

The objective of the three-day workshop would be to equip participants with the knowledge, skills, and tools necessary to conduct effective and impactful research in the field of urban studies.

On the first day, participants will be introduced to the concept of research and framing research questions and objectives.

On the second day, participants will gain insights into designing a research project in urban studies and exploring its application in the different domains of urban studies. They will understand the process for literature review.

On the third day, participants will learn about research methodology and variables. In the final session, they will learn about analysis and visualisation.

The workshop will introduce various open-source tools available online to help participants formulate their research design in an effective way.

Delhi NCR participants can join offline while others can join online.

The workshop will introduce various software like Zotero, Elicit, Freeplane, IRIS, Scite, Research Rabbit, Humata, among others. to help participants formulate their research design in an effective way.

our Instructors

Dr. Namesh Killemsetty 
Assistant Professor of Public Policy, OP Jindal Global University

He completed his Ph.D. in Public Policy from the University of Massachusetts Boston in 2021 and has prior experience working as a Civil Engineer and Project Manager in various infrastructure projects before moving to Public Policy. His work particularly focuses on housing, tenure security, and community rights of slum dwellers integrating theories and methods from Urban Studies, Policy Analysis, Operations Research, and Decision Sciences. He is the recipient of the 2021 Urban Affairs Association Alma H. Young Emerging Scholar Award, USA. 

Dr. Shamindra Nath Roy /
Associate Fellow, Centre for Policy Research

He is a mixed-method researcher and his interest lies in examining inequalities through spatial lens. He has worked on rural-urban. transformations, nature of governance in urban sprawls, internal migration dynamics in India, determinants of female workforce participation in India’s cities and socio-spatial inequalities in basic services at the sub-city level. He has a keen interest in deploying spatial concepts like proximity, contiguity or interaction in analyzing non-spatial data, and working across datasets from various sources in the urban context.
