About the course

We live in a conflict prone world, where mediation, dialogue, diplomacy, and, at times, interventions have become key strategies of survival and coexistence. The world has power inequalities, which make it crucial for us to study bargains and strategies for negotiation. 
The workshop will focus on the patterns of bilateral and multilateral diplomacy in the 21st C. It will undoubtedly reflect on lessons from past practices and assess the present challenges and opportunities in a bid to understand how diplomatic practices have evolved in our globalized world.

Outline of the Workshop


The workshop will offer insights towards understanding diplomacy, its theoretical underpinnings, protocols and international strategy. It will also provide expert opinions and political commentaries from practitioners of diplomacy.

Meet Our Instructor


Dr. Rohee Dasgupta

Part-time Professor, School of Conflict Studies, Saint Paul University


Rohee Dasgupta is an anthropologist who teaches advanced courses on Identity and Conflict at The School of Conflict Studies, Saint Paul University. She has been a fellow of the Schusterman Center for Israel Studies, Brandeis University, and was the Assistant Director for the Zelikovitz Centre for Jewish Studies at Carleton University. She has conducted ethnographic research in Poland, Israel, and the US on various projects related to Jewish Identity. 

She holds a PhD in Law (specializing in legal anthropology) and MA in Diplomatic Studies from Keele University in the United Kingdom, a MA in Jewish Education from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel and a BA in English Literature from Calcutta University, India. Previously she has taught Politics and International Relations, European and Israel Studies at OP Jindal Global University, India; Keele and Open Universities in the UK. She resides in Ottawa and is a Canadian citizen.

Prof. (Dr.) Mohan Kumar

Former Ambassador and presently Professor and Dean of the Office of International Affairs & Global Initiatives, Jindal School of International Affairs


He has an outstanding career in the Indian Foreign Service lasting 36 years which culminated in his being India’s Ambassador to France based in Paris.

He has enormous expertise in the area of international trade- he was India’s lead negotiator first at the GATT (General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade) and then at the WTO (World Trade Organization) in crucial areas such as Intellectual Property Rights, Services, Dispute Settlement, Rules and Technical Barriers to Trade. He was a leading member of India’s delegation at the WTO Ministerial Conferences held in Marrakesh (1994), Seattle (1999) and Doha (2001)..

He also serves as the Chairman of Research and Information System for Developing Countries (RIS) since June 2018. Ambassador Kumar is author of a book entitled “Negotiation Dynamics of the WTO: An Insider’s Account”, published by Palgrave Macmillan (2018). His recent book India's Moment : Changing Power Equations around the World , has been published by Harper Collins.
