Workshop Outline

The course will discuss approaches to research ethics in ethnography (positionality and reflexivity, intersectionality) and the politics of research.

Ethnographers write fieldnotes, and we will explore the skills of effective fieldnote taking, together with a real-life exercise in ethnographic observation.

In a digitally mediated world, the “field” for ethnographers has expanded to the virtual. In this course we will explore how to do digital ethnographic research, the core considerations in designing a digital ethnographic research project, and how to code and analyze ethnographic data.

A critical autoethnographic method opens up possibilities of not only interrogating particular cultural phenomena or contexts but is also invested in looking inward to the researcher’s own location within those cultural contexts. We will explore the how-tos of using critical autoethnography, its utility, and engage in exercises of self-reflectivity.

Start designing your own ethnographic research project. Find out how to begin thinking and writing up ethnographic research. Develop your research skills in interviewing, collaboration and data analysis.
